Matthew 4

The Temptation of Jesus

1^(A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness ^(B)to be tempted by the devil.

2And after He had ^(C)fasted forty days and forty nights, He ^[a]then became hungry.

3And ^(D)the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the ^(E)Son of God, command that these stones become bread."

4But He answered and said, "It is written, '^(F)MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"

5Then the devil took Him into ^(G)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of

the temple,

6and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,
'^(H)HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU';
and
'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP,
SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'"

7Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, '^(I)YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'"

8^(J)Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory;

9and he said to Him, "^(K)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me."

For the Children:

It has been a few weeks, but who remembers what we have learned about Jesus and His life so far?....That He was baptized and we learned about His birth. Well this week we are going to learn a little more about the life of Jesus. Our story this week comes from Matthew Chapter 4, in the new testament of the Bible. Have you ever had someone try to tell you to do something you know was wrong? Maybe something your mom and dad says is not OK? ...(allow children to answer) ... When someone or something is trying to tell you to do something that you know may be wrong, this is called being tempted. Well would you believe this happened to Jesus too? One day Jesus was led up to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Jesus had fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Who knows what fasting is? ... This means Jesus did not eat. God had told Jesus to fast. He spent this time in prayer. Well 40 days and forty nights is 10 days longer than a month. Can you imagine how hungry you would be after more than a month with out eating? Do you think you could do it? What would be the food you would miss the most if you were fasting? (allow children to answer. )

Well Jesus was very hungry too. And just when Jesus was at his very hungriest the Devil came to Him and said... "If you are really the son of God like you say... then you should have all the power in the world... command these rocks to turn into bread. " Imagine if you hadn't eaten for 40 days and someone brought a nice fresh hot piece of pizza into your room and you could smell

it... do you think you would be tempted?

But Jesus was strong. He told the devil that man shall not live by bread alone... which means... we need more than just food to survive... what else do you think we need? (allow answers)...We need God to live. We need to follow all of God's instructions. We need to live on everything that God says.

Well then the Devil tested Jesus... He took him to the tallest building and said... if you really are the Son of God, then Jump of this building, because it is written that God will send angels to protect his Son. So if you jump off this really tall building the angels should catch you and you will not get hurt.

What do you think Jesus said?....

Jesus agreed ... it does say in the Bible that God will protect Him with angels. But it also says that we are not to Test God. Who knows what test means?....to challenge God.

Well the devil kept trying... This time he took Jesus to a very high mountain... he showed Jesus all the Kingdoms and place of the world and all of their beauty. The devil told Jesus that he would give Jesus all of these places, If only Jesus would fall to his knees and worship the devil.

Do you think Jesus did? Would you? What if I told you that I would give you every video game, or littlest pet shop toy, or Princess thing ever made... or even an entire toy store... and all you

had to do was not love God anymore... would you do it?

Well Jesus wanted no part of it... He told the Devil to GO AWAY! He said that he will only worship and serve God.

Well this did it... the devil left and went away and the angels came and helped Jesus.

• What does it mean to be tempted?... To have someone or something tell you to do something that may be wrong.

December 23rd Lesson taught by the McCrimmons

Wow, I have never gotten to be 2 weeks ahead of the game before. Ok Same stuff applies only this week the kids will be going down stairs and singing the songs that they have been practicing.

December 16th Lesson Taught by the Arneys

Ok so as I mentioned at church, for the next couple of weeks things will just need to be a little flexible. The children will be Singing downstairs on 12/23. So with that there will be some extra long singing practice times. So with that there are some changes. First of all, if as the children are singing they go through all the songs once...at least... and you notice that we have lost all their focus... go ahead a pull them out and take them back to class. If you think that they are sitting well through it then go ahead and leave them in there.

We are going to continue with our lessons on the life of Jesus after Christmas. Due to the music practice we rushed through our lesson on Jesus' baptism... and though we got through it.. we did not get to the craft... the other 5 parts of the wordless book.... or the memory verse.
So for 12/16 if we can come in to class... let the kids play...
at about 10:35 let them play freeze dance (play music... they dance... stop music... they freeze... pretend that they are in jungles... on a boat.... spies...etc) or simon says. Then they will go to worship time, bring them back at your discretion. When they come back give them snack and go over last 5 parts of wordless book. Again.. all the wordless book stuff is in the basket on the TV cabinet 1 John 3:16. If you have time after all this... then review Jesus' baptism... quickly :

ie.....Who remembers last weeks lesson on baptism.... John the baptist, baptized Jesus, then what did God do? He opened up the heavens and sent a Dove.. and said "this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased"

Go ahead and make the dove craft if time. Supplies are on the cabinet. I will come up on Sunday and show you how. It is easy.

Then parents should be there.

Matthew 3:13-17

The Baptism of Jesus

13(A)Then Jesus arrived (B)from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him.
14But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?"
15But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us (C)to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted Him.

For the Children:

Last week we learned about Jesus' birth. This week we are going to learn a story about Jesus, when he had grown a little older. Jesus had a cousin named John the baptist. Many people who met John the baptist thought he was a wild and strange man. You see John the baptist chose to live in the wilderness. He had clothes made out of animal furs like camels hair and a leather belt around his waist and lived off food he found in the wilderness like locust and honey. Locust are little icky bugs. He would wander around the wilderness of Judea, saying to everyone he would meet, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Who remembers what repent means?.... To ask for forgiveness for your sins.
Well most people just thought he was crazy. But John the baptist still asked everyone he met to repent and be baptized. As time went on many in Jeruselem and judea and even in surrounding areas would come to john the baptist to be baptized. John the baptist would baptize them himself in the river. After they confessed or repented of their sins.
Who knows why we get baptized?... to be washed of our sins.... to tell the world that you believe in Jesus.
Well one day as John the baptist went about his normal day, a man arrived from a place called Galilee. He came to the Jordan river, where John the baptist was, so that he might be baptized.
This man was Jesus.
John the baptist was surprized. He said to Jesus, Lord you should be baptizing me... how can I possibly baptize you. But Jesus told John the Baptist that he was to do as he said and baptize him. Because it was important . So John did just that.
After John baptized Jesus, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and God opened up the heavens and sent out a dove and made Jesus lit up.
And God's voice called out from Heaven and said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."
Which meant... This is Jesus He is my son and I am very proud of him.

• What did the people think of John the baptist? ... that he was crazy.
• Where did John the baptist live? …The wildernes of Judea
• What did he wear?...Camel fur and a leather belt

The Wordless Book

Opening Activity for 8 more weeks:
For the next 2 months we are going to be discussing Jesus' life with the kids. In our opening activity, we are going to use a semblance of what has been used since the 1950's: The wordless Book. The Wordless book is a system of telling kids the Gospel message using colors and no words. In the same way we are going to use colors, symbolism actions, and sounds to teach the kids about jesus' life. The first week we will be telling the kids what all the colors and symbols represent. Jeremy and Rachelle did this. I believe they got through the first 4. I will go through the rest next week. I put together a basket with teacher visual aids of the wordless book and a simplified copy of this. You can see it in the picture above. Each week there will be some sort of activity to help the children learn this. This sunday the children put together their own wordless book to take home. If a child comes that has not received one please put one together for them. If we run out I have saved a copy on the church computer so please just ask me.
With each color or symbol, tell the kids that each time they see you hold up the color they are to make a sound or do an action.

Week one, Jesus is born: Piece of cloth (crying sound, rub eyes like a baby) Jesus was sent to earth by God and became a man; Jesus was born in Bethlehem in a manger and wrapped in a blanket.

Week two, Jesus is baptized: Blue piece of paper (Jump up and down and say 'splish splash') Jesus was baptized by john the Baptist, and when he was baptized, God said, "This is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased. "


Week three, Jesus never sinned: White paper (swing finger from side to side and say "no, no, no") Jesus was tempted in every way we are, but never sinned.

Week four, Jesus teaches: The Bible (sit and fold hands) Jesus' life taches us about God, and how to be like Jesus.

Week five, Jesus does miracles: Bandaid ( hold up one leg like an owie) Jesus healed many sick people and forgave people's sins.

Week Six, Jesus died for us: Red paper (Hold arms out like on a cross and say "Jesus loves me this much) Jesus died on the cross to take away our sins.

Week Seven, Jesus rised from the tomb: Green paper (cover eyes and uncover eyes) Jesus rose from the tomb. He beat sin, satan, and death.

Week 8, Jesus goes to heaven: Yellow paper ( both hands stretched into the air) Jesus is in Heaven and the king of kings and Lord of Lords.

Week 9, Jesus will be back: Crown (raise hand and say, "I believe, I believe) Jesus will come back to take all who believe and trust in him to heaven.

(Our goal is that once the kids see a color or symbol, they would be able to not just make the sound and do the action, but that they would be abler to say what it means. Again, theis may take a few weeks fir them to begin to understand and catch on.
It may also be fun to start holding up the colors faster and faster each week, or to have the kids come to the front and pick a color or symbol out of the bag to share with the group. )

Class Preparation:

Weekly it is the teacher's responsibility to read through the Bible story or Scriptures being taught. It is also the teacher's responsibility to have ready in advance any materials needed that are not supplied by the church. In addition, please pray for the families and the children of your class throughout the week, keeping in touch with any of the families that may have concerns or who may be going through struggles at home.

LESSON (Children should be sitting on Bible blanket while hearing the lesson) Please note there are felt board props in the cupboard. There is a book (Betty Lukens) in the cupboard that you can use to look up the story and it will direct you to the right felt pieces to use, so allow extra time if you wish. This takes some time to figure out so please if you choose allow yourself enough time to set up. Otherwise any props you can bring to accentuate the story will be very helpful.

If you are find you are lacking on time please combine snack and the lesson together.

Please do not allow the children to play with toys at the end of class unless all this and snack is done. I find children would rather play with toys than do much of anything else. I am trying to promote consistency in the class. Thanks so much feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Sunday Timeline

9:30 - Staff for Sunday on-site. Pray for morning. Discuss any pressing issues. (yes this is semi-new - more on this during training)
9:50 - Check-in opens
10:00-10:15 - Limited free play (i.e. a box of legos, coloring, and a box of blocks)
10:30-10:40 - Opening activity or game pertaining to the lesson (usually active to get the wiggles out)
10:40-10:55 - Worship time
10:55-11:05 - Bring out bible blanket. Have each child sit (sometimes in assigned seats if they shouldn't sit next to another child because they are unable to listen) Take time to talk about the child's week. Give praises and prayer requests. Pray.
11:05-11:20 - Lesson time. Children know this is a time for listening. I always make sure to ask questions and the end to sum up the lesson and make sure the children understand it.
11:20-11:30 - Craft or Activity Pertaining to the lesson
11:30-11:35 - Wash hands/Snack time
11:35-11:50 - Clean up/ parent pick up

Discipline Policy

Here it is, Please try to keep consistency with this. If there is a child who is consistently having a hard time please let me know.

1. Verbal Warning - i.e., Bobby I need you to listen and be silent while I am giving the lesson so that that you and your friends can learn. If you cannot next time you will be in the time-out chair.

2. Time-Out - i.e., Since you chose not to sit and listen Bobby, please go sit in time-out. Next time we will talk to mom and dad when they pick you up.

3. Parent Conference - i.e., Bobby since you are still not choosing to behave we will be talking to mom and dad. Anymore, we will go get them.
4. Downstairs. Send rover to get parents
