Opening Activity:

Review the wordless book. I found it worked well right after worship time to give them snack at the table and bring out the wordless book basket. Ask them the first what the colors mean. Then ask if they remember the motion that goes with it. For the Jesus heals since it is represented by a band aid, we changed the motion to holding tip of index finger and saying ouch. Then please make sure they have been introduced to all of them. At the end please bring it back to theis resurected one and let them know this is what we will be learning today. Then you can move them to the Bible blanket.

Mark 16
The Resurrection

1(A)When the Sabbath was over, (B)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, (C)bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him.
2Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
3They were saying to one another, "Who will roll away (D)the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?"
4Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large.
5(E)Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they (F)were amazed.
6And he said to them, "(G)Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the (H)Nazarene, who has been crucified (I)He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.
7"But go, tell His disciples and Peter, '(J)He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.'"
8They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

For the children:

Over the last lessons what have we learned about Jesus ? (Allow children to answer... born in a manger, was baptized, taught in a temple, did miracles, was tempted, died on the cross for our sins.) Well this week we will be learning about what happened after Jesus died. So after Jesus died, he was taken off the cross and put in a tomb... which is like a cave. They put a large heavy boulder in front the entrance to the tomb and there were guards guarding it.

One day Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices to bring to Jesus. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, "How are we going to move the very heavy stone away from the entrance to Jesus' tomb?"
But when they got there, they saw that the very heavy stone had already been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting thereand they were very frightened.
6"Don't be scared," he said. "You are looking for Jesus, who died on the cross for your sins He has risen! He is alive! He has left this tomb. See look this is where he was and now he is gone. Hurry go tell Peter and the other disciples what you have seen here.
Shaking and confused, the women ran away from the tomb. But they were too scared to tell anyone. next week we will learn what happens when People meet Jesus after he left the tomb.

Questions:
Where did they put Jesus after he died?... In a tomb.
What was in front of the tomb?... A very heavy boulder.

What else was guarding the tomb?...Soldiers
What were the ladies bringing to Jesus? ....Spices

Was Jesus there?...no
Why?.....because Jesus had risen.

What did the angel tell the ladies to do? ....tell the disciples
Did they?.... No.

Why?... they were too frightened

Activity:

Craft: Jesus' Tomb. Print up picture of Jesus Click here for Color Sheet . Leave it the smaller size. Cut a tomb (brown consrtuction paper circle) with a half circle cut out for the entrance. Glue the color sheet on the back of the contruction paper so you can see jesus through the entrance. cut a smaller black circle (or what ever color we have) Glue only one side to the brown paper so it can open like a door and you can see Jesus when you open it.

Jesus Lesson 6

Then you can move them to the Bible blanket. You can play a game with it. Have the kids sit in a circle and hand them a color when you yell out the color they can tell you what their color means.

Lesson warm down (or anytime you need to fill some time):Freeze dance, to get the wiggles out, we have done this at the end while waiting for parents last week and it worked well. Freeze dance could be replaced with Simon says, follow the leader,I am going on a trip, red light green light, musical chairs, or any pretend game. It is a good way for us to keep the room cleaned up and the kids to leave with a smile on their face.

For the Children:So far we have learned about how Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem, How Jesus' cousin John the baptist baptized Jesus, how the devil tempted Jesus 3 times and Jesus never sinned, how even at a very young age, Jesus was teaching people about God, today we will be learning about the most important thing Jesus did for us. What do you think that is? (allow th kids to guess)... This is the story of how Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Today we will be talking about just a small part right at the end when Jesus dies. There are 3 crosses that have men on them. 2 of the men are Criminals and one is Jesus, who never sinned. These men had been hung on the cross for quite a while. They would stay there until they died. Even the two criminal men beside Jesus had told him that there was no reason for Jesus to be there, because he was Lord, Jesus told them they were forgiven and would go to heaven. When Jesus said his last words loudly, which were,"Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT." Which means he was telling God he trusted Him and knew he would see Him again. Having said this, He breathed His last breath abd died.
Now a centurion saw this, a centurion is a Roman Army officer who is in charge of hundreds of soldiers, he began praising God, saying, "Certainly this man did nothing wrong."
After Jesus was dead all the crowds, some who were cheering for Jesus to die, were very sad and upset and went home.
And Jesus' friend were standing back watching all this happen.

Questions:
Why did Jesus die on the cross?... For our sins

Did God forgive the criminals who died next to Jesus?... Yes

What food were they able to find?...5 loaves of bread and 2 fish
Why?.....because God is forgiving. They accepted Jesus.

Does God forgive us?... yes

Do we all sin? ....Yes...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Were the people happy after Jesus died?.... no they were sad.

Activity: Craft: 3 cross pictures. Just have the children draw a hill with 3 crosses on it. Make sure to remind them of what they are drawing as they do it.

John 6:5-15

5Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to (A)Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?"
6This He was saying to (B)test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do.
7(C)Philip answered Him, "(D)Two hundred [a]denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little."

For the Children:

So far we have learned about how Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem, How Jesus' cousin John the baptist baptized Jesus, how the devil tempted Jesus 3 times and Jesus never sinned, and how even at a very young age, Jesus was teaching people about God. This week we are going to learn about how Jesus does mirales. What is a miracle? .... (let the kids answer)

One day Jesus was teaching the people. He saw a very large crowd coming to him to be taught. As a test he asked his disciple Phillip where they can go to buy bread to feed all of these people so that they could stay and learn. But Jesus knew exactly where he would get bread, he just wanted to test Phillips faith.
Philip answered him, "We wouldn't have made enought money to feed even one bite to these people if we spent all the money we made in 8 months on bread!"
Another of his disciples, Andrew, who's brothers name was simon Peter, said to them, "Well, here comes a boy with five small loaves of bread and two small fish, but those can possibbly feed the thousands and thousands of people that are here. ( at this point a visual aid would be helpful... perhaps draw the bread and fish on the white board and ask the children how many people they think the bread and fish might feed. )
But Jesus wasn't worried, he just said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and all the people sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus then took the loaves, He prayed giving thanks to God for providing the loaves of bread, and gave all of the men who were sitting in the field as much bread as they could possibly eat.Then Jesus took the fish and gave thanks to God for it. Then he gave all the people sitting as much fish as they could eat.
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Lets gather together all the left overs. We are not to waste anything." So they gathered the left overs. All the left overs and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

Do you think it was possible for just 5 loaves of bread to feed 5000 people? How about only 2 fish? Why do you think Jesus was able to feed 5000 people with so little food? (Because Jesus could perform Miracles)
After the people saw the Miracle that Jesus did, they began to say, they were amazed. They thought Jesus was a prophet. Jesus knew that the wanted to force Jesus to be king. So Jesus left to be alone in the mountains.

Questions:

• Why were so many people gathered around Jesus?... To listen to Jesus teach.





• Why were Phillip and Andrew worried?... Because they did not have enough money to feed the people.
  
  



• What food were they able to find?...5 loaves of bread and 2 fish





• How many people needed to be fed? ....5000





• Was Jesus able to feed all the people?...yes





• Why?.....because Jesus can do Miracles.

I found it worked well right after worship time to give them snack at the table and bring out the wordless book basket. Ask them the first what the colors mean. Then ask if they remember the motion that goes with it. For the Jesus heals since it is represented by a band aid, we changed the motion to holding tip of index finger and saying ouch. Then try to introduce the rest of them. At the end please bring it back to the Jesus teaches one and let them know this is what we will be learning today. Then you can move them to the Bible blanket.

Luke 2:41-52

Visit to Jerusalem

41Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year at ^(A)the Feast of the Passover.

42And when He became twelve, they went up there according to the custom of the Feast;

43and as they were returning, after spending the ^(B)full number of days, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. But His parents were unaware of it,

44but supposed Him to be in the caravan, and went a day's journey; and they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances.

45When they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem looking for Him.

46Then, after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.

47And all who heard Him ^(C)were amazed at His understanding and His answers.

48When they saw Him, they were astonished; and ^(D)His mother said to Him, "Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, ^(E)Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You."

For the Children:

So far we have learned about how Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem, How Jesus' cousin John the baptist baptized Jesus, and how the devil tempted Jesus 3 times and Jesus never sinned. This week we are going to learn about Jesus being a teacher. Who has a teacher? .... (let the kids talk about school... or they might say that you are their teacher.) What is a teacher's job to do?... allow kids to answer. What have you learned from your teachers?.....allow kids to answer. Now imagine you were just a few years older than you are now... do you think you could be a teacher? Could you teach men and woman much older than you? .... Well Jesus did just that. Every year Jesus' parents headed to Jerusalem to go to the passover feast. This was a time when they celebrated God saving His people way back when Moses was alive.
Jesus was only 12 years old he was still a kid. If it were today here and now he might be just finishing the 5Th grade. So this year, because Jesus was 12, it was a special year... Jesus got to go to the Pass over feast too. He was never allowed to go before, because he was not 12 yet.

Well as the feast ended and Jesus and his family had stayed a few days, Jesus' family returned home and Jesus stayed in Jerusalem. All by himself. His parents did not know that Jesus had stayed behind them. They figured they Jesus was with the rest of the group heading home and did not worry. But after they were traveling for a day and still had not seen him, they started to worry. They looked for him everywhere. They check with their family and friends that had been traveling with them, but no sign of Jesus. When they could not find Jesus they headed all the way back to Jerusalem, to look for him.

Now imagine if this were your parents. Say you and your family drove to Disneyland. And your grandparents drove in a car behind you. Imagine that your parents drive a day and a half from Disneyland all the way back to your house, and the whole time they think you are in the car behind them driving with your grandparents.... When they get home and see you are not there, how do you think they feel? .... allow the kids to answer... this may take some prodding to help the children understand.

Well Jesus' parents were very worried too. They searched for 3 days in Jerusalem not finding their son Jesus. Finally they see him. And where do you think Jesus was? Do you think he was scared and crying? ...no Do you think he was going crazy and eating all sorts of sweets and not following the rules, because his parents weren't around? ...no Jesus never sinned remember.

No they found Jesus in the temple, sitting in the middle of some very smart very grown up teacher. Jesus was listening to them and asking them questions. But not only that people around him were amazed and shocked. They had never seen a 12 year old... who understood God so well and had such smart answers to the questions. Jesus was teaching these very smart teachers in the temple.

Well Mary and Joseph, Jesus' parents were not quite as amazed. When they finally found Jesus, Mary asked in shock, "Son, why are you treating us this way." Which would be like your mom saying... we were worried sick, where have you been? She told Jesus how hard her and his father had been looking for him and how scared she was.

But Jesus simply answered, " Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I would go to my father God's house?"

But his parents did not like that answer. They did not understand what Jesus was saying and they took him home to Nazareth right away. And because Jesus was obedient, and Honored his parents he stayed there with them and followed their rules.

His mother loved Jesus very much and was very happy with her Son after that.

And as Jesus got older, his got much smarter and more grown up and men and God respected him more and more.

Jesus spent the remainder of his life teaching. He taught his disciples , followers, and those he met on his travels. We will learn more about this next week

Activity: Craft: Teacher Scrolls.
Take 2 Popsicle sticks. cut an 8 1/2 x11 piece of white paper (can be found near copier) in half horizontally (each piece should be about 4 x 6 ) fold 1 inch of each 4 inch end of the paper over the Popsicle stick and tape. Write Jesus teaches on the paper and 1 John 3:16a allow children to decorate... then roll into scroll. Feel free to call me for help or if you need me to come up and show you. Also if you need me to copy color sheet.
