Obedience Lesson 2

Genesis 12: 1-8

Monthly Bible Verse: 1 John 4:19 We love because he first loved us.

Monthly Theme: Go and be obedient

Weekly Focus: God told Abraham "Go to a place you do not know"



Learning objectives: The things we want the kids to understand when they go home are:

1. God told Abraham to go to a place you do not know.

2. Abraham was obedient and left his fathers house.



Check in activity: See the on going theme activity post right before this for your opening activity. You may also want to have a volunteer keep a rhythm with an instrument if you have one... you can easily make one by putting rice in a little jar or plastic storage container. You might want a couple and to have the children take turns.



Lesson warm up: I am going on a Trip. Have the kids sit in circle clapping their knees and saying: I am going on a trip.. Kids repeat:I am going on trip .. I am going where God tells me (Kids repeat) What are you going to bring with you.... do this until each kid says something. Pretend to pack it as you go. The kids know how to play this but ask me to demonstrate if my description is confusing.

For The Children:



(It would be helpful to bring in a suitcase or back pack and put in it either the real thing or pictures of: A tent, clothes, a camel , a sheep, a goat, food, pots and pans... anything you might need for a long trip. As you take it out... tape it to the wall or set it against the wall. )



Pretend you are Abraham. Tell the children: " My name is Abraham. God has important things in store for me. I am going to tell you about a time God asked me to do something that was very hard to do. One day. God Asked me to pack up a bag of things. He told me to take my lovely wife Sarah and my nephew Lot and to move away from my comfortable house with warmth and food and to leave my family. Well I asked God where I was going and he just wanted me to be obedient. He told me just to go and he would tell me where I was going... so I did... I packed up my bag (Put all your stuff in your bag) and we were on our way. Now I am an old man...75 years old and I walked for a while. Finally I arrived at a place named Caanan. And God said this is the land that I will give to you and your family because you are obedient. And it was. I went on to raise children here.... but that is another story.

Questions:

What did God tell Abraham to do? ..... Go away to a new land

Did Abraham leave is family?.... yes

Why?.... because Abraham was obedient.

Did God provide for Abraham?... Yes

What does obediant mean?.... To do what we are told

Are you obediant?....

What can we do to be obediant?



Craft: Trip Collage.. I will bring in some magazines. Have the kids cut out pictures of things they would pack and glue on paper. Write: Abraham was obedient on them.

Obediance theme ongoing opening activity

Have the kids stand up and begin to march like soldiers around the room (you can
even begin with, Hut 2, 3, 4, Hut, 2, 3, 4 in a follow the leader type fashion). As they are marching, ask them questions
about the four men to be studied this month in cadence. Have them do hand motions
that represent what God has asked of the men for each question that you ask. End
with what Jesus has asked us to do.
Hand motions and questions:

Noah
Q: What did God ask Noah to do?
Motion: Hammer one hand into the other and say, Go and build a boat!

Abraham
Q: What did God ask Abraham to do?
Motion: Put hand to forehead as if looking far away and say, Go to a place you do not
know!

Moses
Q: God said to Moses Go tell Pharaoh
Motion: Shake finger as you would to somebody doing something wrong and say, Let
my people go!

Jesus/us
Q: What did Jesus tell us to do?
Motion: Point as if pointing at something in front of you and say Go and make
disciples.

Obedience Lesson 1

Learning objectives:

The things we want the kids to understand when they go home are:
1. God told Noah to go and build a boat.
2. Noah was obedient and did everything God told him to do.

Check in activity:
We are on to new and exciting Bible lessons this week. The ongoing monthly activity is in the next post after this.

As this is the first week, tell the kids the questions and show them the answers and
hand motions yourself as they march so they can begin to understand what is
expected of them. This will develop over the next few weeks. You may also want to
have them march in place until they pick up the answers and hand motions, at which
time they can march around the room. If nothing else, the kids will enjoy the marching,
rhythm and cadence questions. If they learn the hand motions after the question is
asked, it will be a bonus. You may also want to have a volunteer keep a rhythm with an
instrument if you have one... you can easily make one by putting rice in a little jar or plastic storage container. You might want a couple and to have the children take turns.

Lesson warm up:

Tell the kids that today they are going to be learning about Noah and that God told
Noah to go build a great big boat called and ark. Noah lived in a very dry place and
when God told Noah to build a boat, even though Noah didn«t understand, he did what
God told him to do.
Q: Who can tell me something about Noah and the Ark?

Tell the kids that one of the things that God told Noah to do was to collect two of every
kind of animal and put them in the ark.

Tell the kids that today they get to pretend to be Noah. They will be given an animal
picture and they will have to find the picture of the animal that matches the one they
were given. Once they have found the matching animal, they will give the pair to you. Hang a piece of brown butcher paper on the wall. There should be some in the classroom. If not just use the wall. This will be the Ark.
Once all the animals are brought to you, tape them to the paper. I am inserting some links here so you Cow; Puppy; Horse; Bird; Monkey; Bunny; Elephant; Tiger; Kitten; Pig; Sheep; Mouse; Deer; Raccoon . This should be enough. Print 2 of each. Any problems let me know I will see what I can do.

For The Children:

God was very upset. His people were not being obediant. They were all acting very naughty. But there was one man who was following God. His name was Noah. Noah was very obediant to God. Who knows what Obediant means?.....do what we are told. God told Noah to build an ark. He told Noah to take his whole family on to the Ark. But that is all God told Noah to find 2 of every kind of animal, one boy animal and one girl animal, and to take care of them and keep them alive on the boat.
This meant any animal... every kind of bird and bug and rodents and every kind of animal. God wanted Noah to keep all of the animals healthy.
God also told Noah to gather enough food to eat for his whole family and all the animals. So Noah did just that. Even though the sun was out and all the other people were thought Noah was crazy, Noah obeyed God.

Then God told Noah to Enter the ark. So Noah did. With his whole family and all the animals. God was protecting Noah from what he was about to do, because Noah was obedient.

7 days later God sent rain. And rained and rained and rained and rained. God made it rain for 40 days and 40 nights. During that time the earth flooded destroying everything and every person. But not Noah and his family... and all the animals. When it was all done God sent a rainbow... as a promise that He would never flood the earth again.

Questions:

What did God tell Noah to build? ..... an Ark
What is an Ark?.... A big boat
Who did God tell Noah to bring with him into the Ark?.... 2 of each animal... .his family
Why did God protect Noah and his family?... Because he was obediant.
What does obediant mean?.... To do what we are told

Opening Activity:

Review the wordless book. I found it worked well right after worship time to give them snack at the table and bring out the wordless book basket. Ask them the first what the colors mean. Then ask if they remember the motion that goes with it. For the Jesus heals since it is represented by a band aid, we changed the motion to holding tip of index finger and saying ouch. Then please make sure they have been introduced to all of them. At the end please bring it back to the yellow , Jesus goes to Heaven and let them know this is what we will be learning today. Then you can move them to the Bible blanket.

1. Jesus is coming back.
2. All who believe will get to go to heaven and live with Jesus.

For the Children:

Over the last couple month we have learned all about the life of Jesus. Where was he born?... Bethleham in a manger.

Who baptized Him?... his cousin, John the Baptist

Jesus was a teacher from a young age. He performed lots of miracles, and he was tempted just like you and me. But did Jesus ever sin?...No. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and was put in a tomb after he died. But then Jesus rose again. There were some that didn't believe Jesus was alive, but then Jesus showed them the holes in his hands. The Jesus went up to heavan to live with God. Well this is story that one of Jesus' disciples named John told. John had a vision about something that would happen. He told in the very last book of the Bible... Revelation that Jesus was going to come back. And guess what... it still hasn't happened. This is part of what John saw.
John saw the heavans open up and a beautiful white horse that was being riden by Jesus. He said the Jesus was the rider of the horse and that the rider of the horse was faithful and true. And righteous. He said the rider of the horse had many crowns. He is coming back angry at those people who have not been following Him. He has armies behind him all on horses and dressed in white. They are following Jesus. Jesus has a sword and on his robes it is written KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. John saw that heavan and earth became new. Imagine. Everything we see around us gone and made new. Even the sea. All the people following God are happy to see him. Jesus lives with them and is their God. There is no more death or pain. No one is sad or cries. Everything is different. Can you imagine. We get to live with Jesus. As long as we have faith and believe that Jesus Christ is our lord. This place is called heavan. After Jesus rose up to heavan.. He has been preparing a place there for us. And everyone who believes and loves and trusts Jesus will live with Him forever. And those don't will not get to.



Questions:
When John saw all this he knew it was true. Even though it hadn't happened and he didn't see it.

Why?... Because John had faith.
Do you have Faith?...

What is Sin?... When you do something you are not supposed to.

Does everyone sin?...yes

Did Jesus Sin?.... No

Who should we be more like?... Jesus

Is Jesus coming back?... Yes

When?... We do not know

Will it be a happy day?... Yes for all believers

27Then He said to Thomas, "(G)Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing."

For the Children:

Last week we learned about how after Jesus died on the cross for our sins, he was put in a tomb. But who remembers what happened? ... (Jesus was alive) but remember the angel appeared and told Mary Magdelan to tell the others, but she was too afraid. Today we will learn what happened next. So Jesus began to appear to the desciples, but one of the twelve disciples named Thomas, was not with them when Jesus came.
When the other disciples saw Thomas they were very excited and said. "We have seen the Lord!" But Thomas thought they were kidding or maybe crazy, he said to them "Unless Jesus shows me the holes in his hand that were put there when he was nailed to the cross and I can touch them, I will not believe it."
Well eight days later Thomas had his chance. The disciples with Thomas were inside again and Jesus appeared. Now Jesus did not walk through the doors or climb through a window, because they were all shut. Jesus just appeared. Can you imagine that? What if we are just sitting here with the door shut and the windows closed and I am standing here talking to you. well what would you do if all of a sudden you saw Jesus just show up standing beside me. What do you think you would do? (allow children to answer) Well lets see what Thomas did. 26After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." When Jesus appeared in the room he said, "Peace be with you" to his friends.
Then just as Thomas wanted, Jesus put out his hand. He took Thomas' hand and let him feel the holes in them. He told Thomas that now he needs to believe that Jesus is alive. And Thomas did believe. He called Jesus his Lord and his God. ansHe was very excited.

Jesus said to him, I am glad you have seen me and now believe. But He was very happy and blessed the men that believed that Jesus rose from the tomb, even before he had seen them.

This is called faith. We are to believe in Jesus. That Jesus rose from the grave and went to heaven. We believe that Jesus is God. Even having never seen him.

Questions:

Did everyone believe that Jesus was alive? .... No Who didn't believe?...... Thomas What did Thomas say would have to happen for him to believe?....
